Ringside by Gerardo Martinez
A couple of local MMA favorites, Angelica Chavez and Mikey “Burque Bulldog” Lovato, were part of DMB Boxing and Saenz Productions-packed card billed as the “Duke City Fall Brawl 2″ at the Albuquerque Convention Center’s Kiva Auditorium on Wednesday night.
The card included 22 bouts of action ranging from junior grappling, to amateur boxing, amateur MMA and professional MMA. Aside from the 22 fights, the audience was also treated to a brief concert by Li’l Rob who rapped inside the ring to the delight of those present.
In the main event, with a huge contingent of fans in the audience, local favorite Angelica Chavez (Chavez Karate) took on the taller “Ms. Luck” Alyx Luck (Black Dragon) from Cheyenne, Wyoming.
Luck was what the Wyoming native was going to need to beat the tough Chavez. Both ladies began the brawl by staying on their feet and taking swings at each other. Catching a few punches from the longer limbed Luck, Chavez went in for the takedown where she would have the advantage. After mounting on top of Luck, Chavez was able to control and eventually lock in an arm bar and submit her opponent at 1:35 of the first round.
The fighter from Cheyenne complained to the referee after the stoppage declaring that she never tapped out as Chavez was cheered on by all her fans in the jam packed Kiva Auditorium. Better luck next time, Alyx.
The co-main event featured the westside’s own Mikey “Burque Bulldog” Lovato (Albuquerque Kickboxing & MMA) against Socorro’s JJ Sedillo (Soco Loco).
As is the case in most of his fights, Lovato was the shorter fighter, but also the more experienced. As soon as he was able to the Burque Bulldog took down the lanky Sedillo. Rapidly taking control on the ground Lovato gained a dominant position. Sedillo attempted to twist out from the bottom of Lovato, but was unsuccessful. Ever since gaining his dominant position Lovato had been hammer-fisting and throwing elbows to Sedillo’s head. Seeing that Sedillo was taking too much punishment and not returning the favor, the referee stopped the bout.
The Burque Bulldog once again showed his bite winning at 3:43 of the first round by strikes.
In one of the most exciting matches of the night Paco “Texas Punisher” Castillo (The Garage) battled Monterrey Mexico’s Eric “Goyo” Perez (Jacksons MMA). Castillo made the drive from Hereford, Texas to take on the Jackson MMA fighter and provide the audience a ton of short lived action.
From the beginning both of these brawlers made it a great stand up fight pummeling each other with clean punches and strikes. It seemed like both fighters were blessed with a solid chin because both were able to withstand each others clean strikes. After a few exchanges Perez’ power became more noticeable and he began to back up Castillo. After dropping him briefly, Perez was able to lock in a standing arm bar and the tough Castillo tapped out.
Perez got the win at 2:23 of the first round.
Another road tripper was Monte Vista, CO’s Jeremy Martinez (Rio Grande Boxing) who took on Albuquerque’s own Mike Barreras (Albuquerque Kickboxing & MMA).
It seemed the boxing ring caused most fighters to want to fight stand up most of the time, which was great for the fans. After trading punches, Martinez caught Barreras coming in with a thunderous right hook to the jaw. Barreras was staggered and intelligently held on and took the fight to the ground. In the process of clearing his head Barreras also was able to mount Martinez and begin striking from up top. Martinez tried to reverse his unfavorable position and in the process Barreras unintentionally landed a blow behind the head of Martinez causing the referee to pause the fight and take a point away from Barreras. After the point deduction the action commenced and so did the punching. This time Barreras didn’t get caught and quickly took it to the ground. A couple seconds after slamming Martinez to the ground Barreras was about to start the assault, but Martinez complained to the referee about a broken rib. The referee once again put a pause to the bout and the ringside doctors to have a look at Martinez.
Martinez did, in fact, have a broken rib and the bout was stopped. Barreras was given victory by tapout at 2:12 of the first round.
Looking to impress the Albuquerque crowd, Dom “Little But Bad” Blanco (TBC) and Bobby “Digital” Huron (Jacksons MMA) poured on the action in their 135 lb. fight. Both fighters were from out of state, Blanco from Nebraska and Huron from Texas.
With a clearly visible size disadvantage Blanco took it to the ground as quick as he could. Once he was able to get into a dominating position on the ground Blanco began hammering away at Huron’s face and opened up a cut under the right eye of Huron. As Blanco tried to lock in a choke hold he was also pounding Huron’s head. Huron unable to fight off Blanco spent the round protecting himself and was finally able to get up about 10 seconds before the end of round one.
The second round began with both fighters exchanging kicks and punches. Huron surprised the shorter Blanco with a flying knee strike that landed on the chin of Blanco and momentarily staggered him. Huron took advantage of Blanco’s daze and locked in a guillotine choke hold and Blanco tapped out at 0:16 seconds of the second round.
Albuquerqueans Josh Silva (Independent) and Jimmy Mallick (Albuquerque Kickboxing & MMA)started off the pro-MMA action.
Mallick and Silva came out swinging at the bell with Silva getting the best of the exchanges. Mallick went in for the take down and tried unsuccessfully to get Silva in some kind of hold. Silva was able to stand up and reset – but not for long, because Mallick quickly took him down again and dominated Silva by landing several blows to the body. Once again Silva valiantly rose up and within a few seconds Mallick took him down again for the third time. This would be the last time because Mallick was able to work in a strong choke hold and Silva tapped out.
Mallick took the win by submission at 3:55 of the first round.
In amateur MMA action, Socorro fighter Jessie Jaramillo (Soco Loco) battled Albuquerque’s Russell Wilson (Albuquerque Kickboxing & MMA). Wilson was victorious at 2:16 of round one with a rear-naked choke hold that Jaramillo was unable to get out of.
In a 145 lb match up the South Valley’s own Paul Ray (Independent) took on David Valverde (Sandoval Fighting Systems) from Los Lunas, NM. Ray wasted no time and quickly took down Valverde hammerfisting him to head and body. After a few seconds Ray was able to work in a rear naked choke hold and Valverde tapped out at 1:47 of round one. Another great win for Ray who is making his presence felt in MMA ranks.
A pair of Albuquerqueans duked it out in a 125 lb bout. Chino Espinoza (ABQ Kickboxing & MMA) and Eddie “The Ghost” Perez (Los Vatos) took it to the ground where neither fighter was able to take control. They both stood back and Espinoza quickly took down Perez for a second time. This time Espinoza was able to get in a Darce choke and the Ghost quickly tapped out at 2:36 of round one.
The opening amateur MMA bout was a 125 lb rematch between Ronnie “Great” White (Alpha Dog) and Joby Sanchez (Chavez Karate).
These two warriors clashed this past July and White won by KO. This time Sanchez wanted looked like he wanted to change the outcome.
In the first round Sanchez showed his improved ground game by dominating White and pounding away to the face of White. White was unable to dsimount Sanchez before the round ended. The second was a near mirror of the first as Sanchez took it to the ground and mounted White. As White was trying to dig himself out of compromising position he was in, Sanchez accidentally landed a power punch to the back of the head of White. White complained and the referee paused the contest to check on White. After the ringside doctors checked the condition of White, the referee waved the fight off because the fighter was in no condition to continue. A neck brace was placed on White and he was ambulanced for further check up. The referree gave the win to White by disqualification at 0:49 seconds of the second round.
