The last hurricane that landed in the Duke City to fight Holly Holm was Melissa “Huracan” Hernandez, and she disappeared as quick as a New York minute. And we all know what happened after that. Promoter Lenny Fresquez assured the press that the Canadian-born “Hurricane,” Jaime Clampitt would not be skipping out on her August 6 appointment with Holm.
“At this point in my career it’s either go big or go home,” Clampitt said yesterday at a press conference held at Hard Rock of Albuquerque. “Win or lose, it will be a great experience for me.”
Clampitt promised this fight would be an exciting crowd pleaser. The biggest challenge, she says, will be adapting to Holm’s style of fighting.
As for Holm, trainer Mike Winklejohn said, “Holly is pound for pound, number one in the world and nobody can keep up with Holly’s footwork.”
Holm has some common opponents with Clampitt, specifically Belinda Laracuente, Mia St.John and Jane Couch, all of whom Holm easily outpointed with unanimous decision wins. Clampitt, on the other hand, won close decisions against Laracuente and Couch. She fought Couch twice, losing and winning once.
On paper it looks like another easy win for the pound for pound women’s champ, but, according to Holm, she never looks past anyone because every fighter comes and gives their all against her.
“As long as I perform what I learned and how I trained, I will win,” says Holm, who is looking forward to keeping her six-year winning streak alive and showing her hometown fans her newly-honed skills.
Tickets are now on sale at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino box office starting at $25. The first 200 box office ticket buyers will receive a fight poster autographed by Holm.
