Good luck to New Mexico fighters from Warrior’s Gym and Isleta Boxing Club who made the journey to the National Jr Golden Gloves Tournament in Mesquite, Nevada. Coach Zamora took a team of six members from both clubs to compete in this years Jr Golden Glove Tournament. Representing Warrior’s Boxing is Brandon Munoz, Ricky Medel, Diego Baustista and Isidro Castillo. Members of Isleta Boxing are Andrew Abeita and Cisco Tewahaftewa.
Looks like Sammy DiPace could be out for a while, due to a shoulder injury sustained in training. Meanwhile, Ricky Vasquez is preparing for a comeback.
Still no opponent named for Austin Trout in his July 31 fight in Las Cruces. Despite his upcoming legal difficulties stemming from last week’s arrest, Trout will definitely be on the card.
Heavyweight David Rodriguez may turn up again on a show before the end of the year, again in Mexico.
What, no more MMA news? Yes, it’s true. NewMexicoCage has been shelved for the time being. Owner Chris Cozzone has been TKO’d by too many projects. Originally, the site was a partnership but after said partner got a taste of the work involved, Cozzone was left holding the bag. “I tried to keep it going, but the day-to-day operations of running a second news website had me floored for a nine-count,” says Cozzone. “It was either share my time and energy between ‘Cage’ and NewMexicoBoxing, or put one on ice.” Having run NMB since 2000, Cozzone went with boxing. In addition to running NMB, Cozzone covers fights for Fightnews (40+ shows a year), is a co-owner of FightWireImages.com, runs his own photography & writing business and is forever working on a book on the history of boxing in N.M. If someone comes along willing to run the site, Cozzone says he will re-open NewMexicoCage.
