Burke’s Blog: Brooks ready!
Burke’s Blog by Louie Burke
The last six weeks has been a tough and rugged agenda for Michael Brooks, but he’s stepped up and prepared hard for his fight tonight like a true warrior. Brooks did everything he needed to prepare for a tough fight against Christian Buffy Holmes: He trained right, ate right, got the rest he needed and was focused throughout camp. His sparring was tough, taking on Trout, Shabazz, Han, Meek and Charlie Averenga in preparation for Holmes. Based on his training, things should fall in place for him fight night.
It’s snowing and I’m hoping to get out of Cruces by 10:00 tomorrow to get up to ‘burque with plenty of time to catch my breath before the card starts. Moose Gomez and Austin did a good job looking after Brooks while I stayed to work. I will look forward to seeing my friends at the fights tomorrow and hope we bring home a win.
Also, Sam DiPace Sr. Has been Ill for the last couple of weeks and was hospitalized last week. Cysts were found in his lungs. Whether there benign or not hasn’t been determined. In the meantime, Sylvia DiPace had a stroke while caring for big Sam Saturday night, collapsing at the hospital. They seem to be doing better, but our prayers go out to both for a full recovery, and our support and prayers go out to li’l Sammy and the rest of the family.
Austin, has taken a little break after a whirl wind year, but is back in the gym and gunning after the Japanese, Nobuhro Ishida, the WBA interim champ and/or Yuri Foreman the WBA world champ. More than likely, Austin will have to fight someone besides these two guys in order to stay busy and sharp before getting a crack at those guys. Ishida is scheduled to fight at the end of December and I don’t think Top Rank, who promotes Foreman will let the this fight happen too soon. In the meantime, we’ll have to stay busy with whomever is available.
It looks like Abie will be fighting on the 16th and, possibly, Sammy, depending on his families health and the toll it could take on him as well. I’ll keep everyone posted as I know more.
I’d like the NM boxing community to please say prayers for the quick recovery of the DiPace family.
