As part of Fight Week festivities at Isleta, the casino, Fresquez Productions and the Office of the State Historian will sponsor a special presentation of New Mexico boxing history on Wednesday, Dec. 2. The presentation will be given by NewMexicoBoxing’s Chris Cozzone at 1 p.m., preceding the final press conference for Holly Holm vs. Melissa Hernandez at 2 p.m. Cozzone will give a sampling of fight reports going back more than a hundred years, including the first recorded women’s bout. The presentation is open to the public and the boxing community is encouraged to attend.
Cozzone’s work on the history of New Mexico boxing has been an extension of a project started by former journalist and boxing commissioner Jim Boggio. Boggio worked on and off for over a decade on the history before passing away in 1997. In 2003, Cozzone “inherited” the work and, after six years of intensive research, raising the total fight card count from 450 to 2,200, he has recently finished research and is ready to begin writing the final drafts in 2010. In 2009, Cozzone received two fellowships from the Office of the State Historian, that enabled him to conclude research around the state.
