Gomez squeaks by Guereca; Estrada KO’d
Just in from Garden City, Kansas: Joe Gomez (17-2-1, 8 KOs), of Bloomfield, squeaked by tonight with a split decision over El Paso/Albuquerque’s Bernardo Guereca (15-9-1, 3 KOs). The fight was high-action, with Guereca piling up an early lead. Gomez outboxed Guereca in the fourth, but the fifth was close, possibly edged by Gomez. Gomez was caught several times in the sixth but weathered Guereca’s attack to edge the round. Guereca came back strong in the seventh, engaging Gomez in a slugging war that had both fighters showing fatigue. In the eighth, Guereca rocked Gomez to start the round, but his momentum was taken away when he was deducted a point for holding. The point off decided the outcome on the cards: 77-75 Guereca and 76-75 twice for Gomez. The fight was the co-main event.
In the main event, Brandon Rios (23-0, 17 KOs) weathered an early attack by game Las Crucen Lorenzo Estrada (3-16-1, 1 KO) to win by a first round knockout, by way of body shots.
