Han, Medina headline El Paso Sept. 24
Zeferino Entertainment is set to return to El Paso, Texas on September 24 when the popular Mexican American brawler David “Strictly Business” Medina (21-2, 10 KO’s) take on the rugged brawler Anthony Shuler (20-7-1, 14 KO’s) in an eight round affair. Medina, who is now ranked #17 by the WBC, is looking poised to explode into the top ten by the end of the year, but anything less than a dominant performance against Shuler would almost certainly derail that.
“David is at a point where every fight is going to be under the microscope,” commented promoter Zef Ramirez, “he knows that a win over Shuler puts him in a position to maintain his world ranking, but a dominant win allows him to advance. “
Although Medina looked impressive in out boxing Miguel Hernandez back in October of last year in El Paso, many feel that Shuler will bring out the brawler in Medina.
“David was able to showcase his boxing skills the last time he fought in El Paso, but I realize that Shuler comes to brawl and I think the Latino fans are going to see why David is called the ‘Gatti of the Rockies’ on September 24th.”
Shuler, who is coming into the fight on the heels of a trio of losses (to #1 ranked Julio Cesar Chavez, and highly touted prospects Andy Kolle and Andy Lee) also recognizes that this is a fight that can rejuvenate his career.
“Shuler has only lost to the best fighters in the world, and he knows he is running out of chances,” added Ramirez, “I think that makes him a very dangerous opponent. He still has the skills and power to beat a lot of really good fighters and he knows he needs to capitalize on this opportunity in El Paso.”
Rounding off the card is local “HOT” prospect Abraham Han (10-0, 9 KO’s) in an eight rounder against a TBA. Han has moved to the front of the pack to establish himself as the hottest prospect in the Southwest, and is eager to show off in front of his local fans. Also on the card is Abel Perry (12-4, 4 KO’s) looking to bounce back after his heartbreaking loss to Jonathan Gonzalez back in July with a six rounder against a TBA. Perry (who was slightly ahead on the judge’s scorecards against the undefeated Gonzalez) was stopped in the sixth and final round of the fight.
“It was a setback for Abel to lose against Gonzalez,” commented Ramirez, “but we knew Jonathan was a world class prospect, and it proved that when Abel brings his A-game he can compete with any welterweight in the world.”
Also on the card is undefeated lightweight Cesar Valenzuela (4-0, 0 KO’s) against a TBA in a four round fight. Valenzuela, who hails from Ciudad Juarez, has fought in El Paso three times and is quickly establishing himself as one of the most popular prospects in Texas. Three MMA cards will also round off the card, with fighters to be announced. The card is to take place at the El Paso Coliseum. Ticket information will be announced shortly.
