Holiday boxing beat

The “Battle of the Mad” doesn’t look like it’s going to happen. “Mad” Mike Alderete is passing on a Jan. 29 showdown with “Mad” Max Heyman. Alderete’s trainer, Danny Romero, says he’s got something bigger in the works for Alderete – possibly a 10-round main event in Canada in February.

Santa Fe’s Clare De La Torre (1-9-1, 1 KO) lost a five-round unanimous decision to Brittany Cruz (6-2-1) Saturday night in Denver, Colo.

Two-for-one tickets for government employees are still available for the Jan. 29 card at Tingley – but we’re being told that, due to glitches with TicketMaster, the offer is good only at Smith outlets and only in certain sections. Anyone having trouble can call Jacob Maes at 505-315-9640.

Speaking of the Jan. 29 show, Team Marquez has donated 20 tickets to the Charter School of Dreams in Los Lunas. Kids with the highest grades at the holiday break will receive the tickets. Boxer Archie Ray Marquez was a recent guest at the school, where he spoke to the students about boxing, goal setting and following one’s dreams.
