J/Os land in El Paso – NM clubs welcome

El Paso will be the site of the 2011 USA Boxing Jr. Olympic/ Jr. Golden Gloves Championships on May 20-22 at the El Paso County Coliseum Judging Arena. Clubs from New Mexico are invited to come down and participate in matched bouts. Anyone interested in coming down can contact Jennifer Han at (915)751-2777, or Mr. Adams (915) 626-8031 or Mr. Vicencio (915) 203-0493 so they can start pre-matching.

Competition Dates: Friday, May 20, 2011 at 6:00 p.m; Saturday, May 21, 2011 at 6:00 p.m.; Sunday, May 22, 2011 at 2:00 p.m.

Venue: El Paso County Coliseum Judging Arena, 4100 E Paisano El Paso, TX 79905

Registration: Athletes and coaches must be registered by the start of the weigh-ins.  All tournament participants (boxers, coaches, officials, physicians, tournament administrators, etc.) must be registered with USA Boxing for the 2011 membership year and have proof of registration (registration pink copy, membership card, passbook validation stamp).  NO BOOK, NO BOX!

Weigh-ins/Physicals: There will be a preliminary weigh-ins on Wednesday, May 18, 2010 from  4:00-7:00 p.m. at El Paso County Coliseum Judging Arena- 4100 E Paisano 79905.  Whatever weight class the boxer enters at the preliminary weigh-ins will be the division they enter for the tournament! The brackets and non-tournament bouts will be taken care of immediately after the preliminary weigh-ins.

Each boxer must make their weight class each day they compete.  Male boxers must arrive at weigh-ins clean shaven or they will be disqualified.

The actual weigh-ins will start promptly at 7:00 am to 9:00 am at the El Paso County Coliseum Judging Arena.  Boxers will have two hours after the initial weigh-ins at 7:00 a.m. to make weight, but not after  9:00 a.m.  The physicals will take place 2 hours before the event starts.

Weights (lbs)/Round Lengths:

Jr. Olympic Men: 90, 95, 101, 106, 110, 114, 119, 125, 132, 138, 145, 154, 165, 176, 189, 201, 201+ lbs; Ages 15-16; Three, two-minute rounds with 1-minute rest period in between rounds.

Jr. OlympicWomen: 80, 85, 90, 95, 101, 106, 110, 114, 119, 125, 132, 138, 145, 154, 165, 176, 189, 189+ lbs; Ages 15-16; Three, two-minute rounds with 1-minute rest period in between rounds.

Intermediate Boys/Girls (Ages 13-14): 70, 75, 80, 85, 90, 95, 101, 106, 110, 114, 119, 125, 132, 138, 145, 154, 165, 176, 189, 201 lbs.; Three, 1.5 –minute rounds with 1-minute rest period in between rounds.

Junior Boys/ Girls 60, 65, 70, 75, 80, 85, 90, 95, 101, 106, 110, 114, 119, 125, 132, 138, 145 lbs.; (Ages 11-12); Three, one-minute rounds with 1-minute rest period in between rounds.

Bantam Boys/Girls (Ages 8, 9, 10): Any beginning weight, with five-pound increments; Three, one-minute rounds with 1-minute rest period in between rounds.

Matched bouts: We will have non-tournament bouts scheduled in the novice, open and junior divisions.  However, all out-of-town boxers or non-tournament bouts will not advance to the Texas Region 8 or Jr. Golden Gloves Tournament.  Junior division matched bouts can occur as long as they follow USA Boxing guidelines (i.e. 8 year olds can only box 8-9 year olds, everyone else can be matched as long as they are within a 24 month age difference).

Equipment: Participants must provide their own USA Boxing approved headgear, form-fitted mouthpiece, foul-proof cup, uniform, gauze, tape, water bottles, etc.  Border Boxing will provide the competition gloves.

Advancing boxers: Junior Olympic and Intermediate champions will advance to the regional tournaments.  The Region 8 Junior Olympic Championships will be held on June 10-12, 2011 in Midland, TX.   The state Jr. Golden Gloves will be held on June 22-25, 2011 at TBA.  All out-of-town boxers will not be permitted to advance to the Texas Regional tournaments.

Age Determination Date:  Athletes must be the age of the division on August 1, 2011 and cannot exceed the age limit on August 1, 2011.  (If boxing in the 15-16 year age division, the boxer must be 15 years old by August 1, 2011 or cannot be older than 16 years of age by August 1, 2011.)

RSVP: All out-of-town clubs, please RSVP if you are planning to attend and give us a list of your boxers with their weight class and boxing experience so we can pre-match them.

Note to Coaches: There will be no sparring sessions or exhibition matches!  After the preliminary weigh-ins, the tournament is closed.  We will begin setting up the brackets and there will be no additions.  Coaches:  please be aware that once your boxer is entered in the tournament; they are in the tournament.  Meaning once the brackets are made; your boxers will compete against another qualified boxer in their division.  No re-matching will occur.

Out-of-town boxers can call in their weight class/division and are not required to show up to the preliminary weigh-ins.  All out-of-town boxers will be required to show up to weigh-ins the morning of their scheduled bout.

There will be a coach’s certification clinic given on Saturday, May 21, 2011 from 8:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. at the Judging Arena.  All coaches that need to be certified or re-certified are encouraged to come.  You must be a registered coach to attend!
