Official word from Team Tapia
(Press Release) Frankie Archuleta has been removed from the June 4 boxing card at Hard Rock Casino and Hotel because he failed medical tests. Archuleta was scheduled to fight Johnny Tapia in the main event. The fights will go on and a replacement for Archuleta will be named as soon as today.
There were problems with an eye test for Archuleta when he was first examined. He went for further testing by a specialist and the results were negative again.
“They told me I could fight at my own risk,’’ said Archuleta. But the Isleta Athletic Commission said that the safety of the boxers was its primary concern and would not accept Archuleta. Tapia said he is disappointed but that he did not want to fight him in these circumstances for fear Archuleta could suffer permanent damage to his sight.
As of Thursday night, fighter organizers were in negotiations with several possible candidates, including a two-time world champion. Tapia has announced that this will be the final fight in his long career and wants to say goodbye from the ring.
