Omega team does well in El Paso
Results from Coach Ric Ponce, Omega Fight Team
The Omega Fight Team of Las Cruces represented New Mexico Sunday night in El Paso, on a USA Boxing-sanctioned amateur card promoted by Rene Armijo’s Fighter Physique club. The show was a sell-out with standing room only, and teams from from all over El Paso and one team from Las Cruces competed in the event.
Rita Martinez, Adam Villalba, and Joaquin Avila, of Omega, and Hector Carrete of Las Cruces PAL made up the team from New Mexico. A total of eleven bouts were scheduled for the night.
First bout of the night at 132 lb, with Hector Carrete taking on Adan Zamora of TNT Boxing. This was a rubber match of wills as both fighters had a win and loss against each other. Adan looked the bigger and stronger of both pugilists, and seemed to take the first round by a narrow margin. Hector came out in the second round busier and moved more confidently as he began to land his punches at will. This round was also a close round but clearly scored for Carrete. The third round, both fighters came out determined to win. Adan began to tire midway through the round as Hector began to land crisp effective combinations that prompted the ref to give Adan a standing eight count. As the action resumed the fighter from New Mexico continued his attack until the final bell, securing the decision.
In the 155 lbs weight class, Adam Villalba took on Javier Nunez of Parrada Boxing. This was a rematch of a fight that took place only a month earlier in which Villalba had won the decision. The fight started off with the fighter from Omega Fight Team clearly boxing confidently, moving around the ring slipping his opponent punches and landing his jab. In the second round Villalba began to settle down and landed a solid right hand, but when he stepped forward with his left foot his rival accidently stepped on his foot causing it to twist. Vilalba was unable to continue and the action was stopped and ruled a no contest.
Rita Martinez of Omega Fight Team, came into the ring the heaviest she’s ever been at 123 lbs, taking on Lucero Rodriguez of Hands of Stone Boxing from El Paso. It was clear from the start that Lucero was bigger of both fighters, but Rita’s suppurb skills and unwavering heart made up for the physical difference as she nullified Lucero’s experience and size. Lucero came out confident in the first round to find she was outclassed by a stronger and more disciplined athlete in Rita. Rita controlled the round with her jab and her excellent defense, making it hard for Lucero to find her target. Rita frustrated her opponent by landing different combinations from all angles and Lucero began to hold in the second round. It was more of the same in the third round, and it was clear that Lucero was outclassed as she continued to hold and roughhouse. Rita maintained her discipline and composure as she continued boxing masterfully. In the fourth and final round, Lucero came out swinging, hoping to score a knock out as she knew she was behind all score cards. Rita obliged to mix up the action and landed the more effective punches of both fighters. It was clear Rita was the winner when the last bell sounded. Rita’s classy and humble attitude was only exemplified as she walked over to Lucero’s corner to thank her for the opportunity to fight against her.
The award for Fighter of the Night was given to Joaquin Avila of Omega Fight Team. Joaquin fought Jose Flores of Northeast Boxing in El Paso. The fight was a very competetive fight from the start with both fighters looking to make a statement. Flores, the taller of both fighters, used his jab to try and keep Avila away. But Avila’s quick counter punching right hand landed squarely on his opponent’s face and body making Flores retreat on several occassions. Flores was no slouch, as he too began finding a home for his left hook. The punches didn’t seem to faze Joaquin as both fighters began to trade power punches before the round ended. It was pretty evident that Avila’s punches were taking a toll on Flores. By the second round, both fighters were bloodied from their noses. Joaquin settled down and started landing uppercuts and hooks with accuracy making the referee step in twice to give Flores two standing eight counts. Flores was a more game fighter in the third but he was no match for powerful punches administered by Avila causing the referee to stop the contest with 30 seconds left in the final round.
The four fighters left the crowd flabbergasted with their uncanny skills and ability to overcome the boisterous cheers of the rival fans. But in the end, these four combatants won the crowd over by their respectful and sportsmanlike conduct.
Omega Fight Team would like to thank Rene Armijo for putting another great show that fight fans will not soon forget. Fighter Physique has committed to putting on awesome shows like this once a month which will be great for our youth and amateur boxing. I encourage other teams from New Mexico to come to El Paso to show case their skills and support USA Boxing.
