From Tuesday at the U.S. Nationals in Colorado Springs: Omega Fight Team’s Rita Martinez lost by a score of 14 to 5 to a taller Yolanda Ezell.  Southpaw Ezell came out of her corner ready to fight, flicking her jab as she attempted to keep Martinez at bay, but the shorter Martinez continued to pressure her with straight right hands and hooks to the body. But it wasn’t enough, as you would tell by the judges scoring that seemed to favor the straight jabs of Yolanda rather than the harder body shots thrown by Rita. The body shorts and the pressure seemed to pay off in the second round for Rita as Yolanda seemed a slower and less busy and didn’t score a point in the second. Rita continued to attack in the third and started to hurt her opponent. Yolanda adjusted and started to use her reach again as she was comfortable sticking and moving, not wanting to mix it up with Rita. Behind on points into the forth round, Rita started to cut off the ring on Yolanda and started landing crisp shots to both the head and body of Ezell. Ezell seemed to get her second wind and started finding a home for her straight right hand. Time ran out on Rita she too started her rally. But it wasn’t enough after the bell rang and the judges felt Yolanda landed more scoring blows. Rita has no regrets after only her second loss in her amateur career. She’ll be back in the National stage this year at the National Pal Championships in October.
