Returning to his hometown for the first time in four years and coming off a one-year layoff, unbeaten El Paso heavyweight David “Nino” Rodriguez (34-0, 32 KOs) took out his opponent, late sub Matt Hicks (13-6, 12 KOs), of Las Vegas, with a left hook at 1:08 of round two of a scheduled eight-rounder that topped a card promoted by Zeferino Promotions at the Don Haskins Center. Hicks, a gusty opponent, went down from a body shot in the first. After the second knockdown, Hicks cited a broken or sprained wrist, and could not continue.

In the co-main event, Hector Camacho Jr. (53-4-1, 28 KOs) toyed with Juan Astorga (14-6, 9 KOs) through eight foul-filled rounds. The crowd booed sporadically as Camacho pot-shotted the forward-moving Astorga. Both fighters were repeatedly warned for low blows. Scores were 77-73 x 3.

In other results: El Paso featherweight Jennifer Han (2-1-1) outboxed Geni Taylor (2-2, 1 KOs) through four rounds, winning with scores of 40-35 x 3; El Paso welter Oscar Valenzuela (3-0, 1 KO) outscored game debuter Javier Nunez (0-1) through four rounds, winning with scores of 40-35 twice and 39-36; and, in the opener, El paso jr. welter debuter Carlos Villa (1-0, 1 KO) took out David Castillo (2-2) at 1:14 of round two. Stay tuned for a full report tomorrow.
