Tonight in El Paso at the Don Haskins Center on a card promoted by Zeferino Entertainment and Nino Bravo Productions: Against his toughest opponent to date, unbeaten El Paso heavyweight David “El Nino” Rodriguez (35-0, 33 KOs) entered the top ten picture with a crushing third round knockout of former title challenger Owen “What the Heck? Beck (29-8, 20 KOs). Rodriguez hurt Beck early with left hooks to the body but in the second, Beck returned fire, boxing the local favorite and landing shots. In the third, however, Rodriguez landed a left hook to the chin that folded Beck to the canvas for over ten minutes. Official time of stoppage 2:03. In the co-main, David “Strictly Business” Medina (23-2-, 12 KOs) of Rocky Ford, Colo., outboxed and punished Juan Astorga (16-7, 10 KOs) through five rounds before flooring his opponent with a left and right in the sixth. Astorga beat the count – barely – and when Medina went in for the kill, the ref stopped the fight at 2:13 of the sixth. On the undercard: jr. welterweight Carlos Villa (2-0) of El Paso scraped by with a majority decision over game veteran Lorenzo Estrada (3-19, 1 KO) winning with scores of 38-39 and 39-36 twice; in the opener, jr. flyweight Joel Garcia (2-0, 1 KO) took out Yarn Harvison (0-3) by TKO at 1:31 of round one.
