Santa Ana show packs a punch
Story by Gerardo Martinez
After packing up her bags and leaving the sport of boxing almost six years ago, Stephanie “Golden Girl” Jaramillo has decided to come back – this time as a promoter. On Aug. 14, Jaramillo’s Golden Girl Productions will host “New Horizon,” which will also mark a return to boxing for the Santa Ana Star Casino in Bernalillo, N.M. ”I found out it’s harder to be a promoter than a fighter,” says Jaramillo who will be returning to the venue where she made a pro debut.
The card is packed with local talent. In the main event will be New York/Four Corners fighter Thadine Swift-Eagle Johnson taking on Karina Hernandez of Culiacan, Mexico. Johnson packs a punch and her 5-0, 5 KO’s is a testament to it, having knocked out each and every one of her opponents. The longest one of her opponents has lasted thus far is two rounds. Culiacan’s Hernandez will try and go 10 rounds against the Roger Mayweather-trained powerhouse.
In a possible show stealer, the co-main will be Albuquerque’s Victoria “Reina de Guerra” Cisneros (5-9-2, 1 KO) taking on Bronx, New York’s Melissa “Huracan” Hernandez (12-2-2, 4 KO’s) for a minor lightweight title. This time around, Cisneros is sure that Hernandez will stick around for the fight and not pull a disappearing act like she did against Holly Holm.
“She has everything to prove, I have nothing to prove” says Cisneros. The two women will be going eight rounds, both looking for a “W”, having both lost in their last outings, Hernandez to unheralded Lindsay Garbatt, 4-3 at the time.
If the two co-mains were not enough, the undercard should definitely do the job. Albuquerque’s “Atrisco Kid,” Fidel Maldonado, will finally get to fight in front of his hometown crowd against Raton’s Travis Gurule. You might not want to blink during this bout – Maldonado has been steamrolling all of his opponents and is looking to go less than the scheduled four rounds.
Also on the undercard in a welterweight battle is Michael Coca-Gallegos of Las Vegas/Albuquerque looking for his first win against Albuquerque’s Josh “Pitbull” Torres. Having lost all of his fights, most of them by close or split decisions, Gallegos hopes to not leave the decision up to the judges this time around, but that will be a feat in itself against the Pitbull.
In a comeback fight will be Santa Fe’s Bryan Garcia (7-18, 2 KO’s) against former Taos boxer Marcos Herrera (5-1-1, 1 KO) in a lightweight bout. In light heavyweight action Timmy Means (0-1) of Albuquerque will take on Michael Montoya (3-2, 2 KO’s). Opening up the night of action will be Albuquerque’s Jazzma Hogue (0-0-1) against Michele Montalbano (0-1-0) of Colorado. Hogue looks to show the hometown crowd what he’s all about after earning an ill-deserved draw in Phoenix, AZ in his last outing earlier this month.
Tickets for the card are already on sale at the Santa Ana Star Casino box office and range in price from $15-$75. This is an all ages event.
