Shiprock update
Several emails & calls were received after this morning’s results from Shiprock.
It has been confirmed that the New Mexico Athletic Commission was not involved in the affair. NMAC Chairman Alberto Leon stated this morning that neither the state commission was not involved in the show. The governing body that did sanction the fight, however, was the Native American Boxing Council. There were also licensed officials, including longtime referee Lorenzo Saiz, involved in the show.
Pertaining to the main event, fighter Thaddine Swifteagle Johnson, who also promoted the card under Red Fist Promotions, emphatically states that she did not pay anyone off, least of all, her opponent, who we are informed, is Colombian Dayse Valdes, record 0-2 (not 12-2 as announced at the fight.) Furthermore, Johnson recounts taking out her foe with a “hard fast body shot.” The punch(es) that took out Valdez were also witnessed by other fighters on the card.
NewMexicoBoxing would like to support Johnson’s statement that there was no payoff; and that she did, indeed, destroy her overmatched opponent with punches. On the other hand, we also believe that matching up an experienced former top-level amateur and undefeated pro like Johnson against an 0-2 fighter is as equally criminal as a payoff.
