Trout gets title shot
After more than a year of waiting for the right fight, Las Cruces’ Austin Trout (21-0, 13 KOs) will get a shot at a title on Dec. 4 when he faces Rigoberto Alvarez (26-2, 19 KOs) for the vacant WBA’s “regular” 154-pound title. Alvarez recently captured the interim version of the belt with a split decision win over Nobuhiro Ishida (22-6-2), of Japan. Trout vs. Alvarez takes place in Cancun, Mexico. The WBA belt was recently vacated by Miguel Cotto, when the WBA elevated him to “Super Champion” status at 154.
If Trout wins, he will be the fourth (male) New Mexican to be a world champion, joining the ranks of Bobby Foster, Johnny Tapia and Danny Romero.
