Five of the top mixed martial arts schools in New Mexico have come together to create the UNITED MMA BASH on Saturday, Sept. 24, at Johnson Gym on the University of New Mexico campus. Only one fighter has been in more than five bouts as the local gyms make an effort to showcase local talent. “We want to give a chance for our fighters to get some experience. We have a lot of people who are looking for fights and this gives them a chance to compete,’’ says Melcor Chavez of the The Chavez Dojo and Karate.

The main event has Rafael “Barata” de Frietas (4-0) facing Eric “Rumble Bee” Buck (8-6-1) in a battle of two Albuquerque mixed martial artists.

A bout that will attract attention will involve two fighters making their pro debut. Cody East of Albuquerque will square off against Cisco Valenzuela of Silver City in a heavyweight bout.

Two female fighters will be trying to get their careers started. Lynae Lovato (pro debut) and Nohime Dennisson (0-1) will be battling. “We have a lot of fighters who have trouble finding bouts,’’ says Lenny Lovato of Lovato Total Fitness “When we heard about this event, we supported it fully.”

Joby Sanchez (1-1) and Ronnie “The Great” White (3-2), both from Albuquerque, will meet in the first pro bout of the night. The evening will start at 7 p.m. with five amateur bouts with all 10 fighters coming from New Mexico. Representing Albuquerque is Sammy Silva. UNM Students such as, Ray Martinez, Andrew Tenneson, Richard Becenti, and Bryon Becenti will be competing as well. From Rio Rancho Javier Palacios, from Las Cruces Alan Lerma, Juan Torres, Gabriel Varela and from Grants Ben Mitchell.

There is a parking structure near Johnson Gym and open parking is available adjacent to the building. Adult and children’s tickets can be purchased at www.cherokeest.com
