Unsanctioned pro bout, mystery opponent in Shiprock

Posted on 28 June 2011   News flash

Update: Thaddine Swifteagle-Johnson‘s mystery opponent Saturday night in Shiprock will remain a mystery, it seems. It has been confirmed, however, that all but one of the bouts on the Shiprock card – which was billed and advertised as a pro card – were exhibitions, the exception being Swifteagle-Johnson’s bout. In the bout, Johnson’s (8-0, 7 KOs) opponent was announced as a “Maria Sanchez” with a record of 3-0, 1 KO. Unless this Sanchez fighter was a debuter who was 3-0 as an amateur, the closest name in Boxrec is a “Juana Maria Sanchez” who is 0-3, from Argentina, who’s not fought since 2005, or a “Maria Sanchez” from Mexico, inactive since 2003, who is 0-1.

Furthermore, although the promoter, Red Fist Productions, is claiming that the card was sanctioned by the Navajo Boxing/MMA Commission through the New Mexico Athletic Commission, Chairman Alberto Leon, of the NMAC, says the NMAC had “absolutely nothing to do with this event.”

One more detail: Johnson’s obscure WPBA belt was also at stake. For a list of the rankings created by the WPBA, click here. Apparently, the only fighters who get ranked are Swifteagle Johnson and anyone she fights. Who, or what, is the WPBA? If anyone knows, contact us.

Stay tuned for a full fight report from Saturday night.
