Zubia ekes by Herrera in debut

Topping off a solid fight card in a first time promotion by the School of Hard Knocks, at the Club La Sierra in Hobbs, N.M., hometown hopeful Edgar Zubia (1-0) won a unanimous decision over gutsy Roswell debuter John Herrera (0-1), with scores of 40-36 and 39-37 twice. Zubia outboxed Herrera in the first and third, but in the second, Herrera came on strong, scoring big left hooks. In the last round, Herrera staggered Zubia more than once. In other results: Snyder, Texas lightweight Johnny Vasquez Jr. (3-0) outclassed tough Los Lunas fighter Joseph Salazar (5-5) over four rounds, winning with scores of 40-36 twice and 39-37; middleweight Al Dixon (2-1, 1 KO) scored a third round kayo (1:38) over Amarillo debuter Servero Padilla (0-1); Lubbock welter Lupe Guzman (4-5) scored a first round knockdown over Michael Coca-Gallegos (0-6), to win with scores of 38-37 twice, and 37-38 in a split verdict; El Paso jr. welterweight Oscar Valenzuela (1-0) won his debut with a unanimous decision over Roswell’s Andres Quintana (0-1), scores of 39-37 twice and 38-35; and, in the featherweight opener, Socorro’s Miguel Armendariz (0-3-1) and Matthew Salazar (1-1-1), of Los Lunas, fought to a draw, scores of 39-37, 38-38 and 36-40.
